BANDUA is the collaborative project between Tempura the Purple Boy and Edgar Valente where Berlin's downtempo electronic music meets the popular spirit of Beira Baixa.
Bandua takes the popular songbook from the Beira Baixa region and approaches it with an electronic folk reinterpretation in the style of Berlin downtempo. Conceived by Portuguese-Brazilian musician and producer Tempura the Purple Boy and with the participation of Portuguese singer and musician Edgar Valente, Bandua represents the first time that these sounds, poems and songs are transformed into a melancholic electronic pop album in the Portuguese language.
Influenced by pagan and Moorish traditions, Beira Baixa is a central region of Portugal steeped in ancient culture with a history of hyper-regionalized folk music. “Bandua is a reinterpretation of popular songs and poems from the region, bringing them into the modern world.” Explains Addario, “we wanted to create something new, without forgetting where we came from”.
Bandua's debut album finds its home on the Dutch/Brazilian Frente Bolivarista record thanks to a connection established through Portuguese DJ and producer Pedro Martins (who also mixed most of the album). Directed by Brazilian producer Pigmalião (Daniel Lucas), the label aims to transcend borders and promote a wide variety of musical styles, from electronic to shamanic, with an ethos that goes hand in hand with this revisionist project of traditional styles.
